New York Liposuction

Liposuction is the fastest-growing procedure in America. For millions of people who are striving to improve their bodies and appearance, liposuction can be a dream come true because it removes fat that diet and exercise have little impact on.

The fact is, certain areas of fat in your body are resistant to change by exercise. No matter how many miles, sit-ups, weights, laps, or leg lifts you do, the fat remains. Until you remove it through liposuction.

Liposuction is appropriate for disproportionately oversized hips, buttocks, thighs, bellies, and "love-handles," as well as fat deposits on arms, calves, knees, ankles, above the breasts, and under the chin.

Fat can be removed from almost any area. Very often, many areas can be treated in a single operation.

Recent advances in liposuction have led us to routinely perform what is referred to as the "Tumescent technique." In this technique, we infuse quantities of highly dilute anesthetic solution into the operative area. This liquid helps to disperse the fat and permits a much smoother removal of more fat than would otherwise be possible.

LiposuctionThis technique also enhances the safety of liposuction by significantly reducing the blood loss in this procedure; this, too, enables larger amounts of fat removal. With the area and length of post-operative bruising greatly reduced, recovery is much faster and more comfortable than it was in the past.

Ultrasonic liposuction is an even newer advance that uses ultrasound energy to help liquify fat. This is especially useful in areas where fat is more fibrous and difficult to remove.

Most of our liposuction surgeries are performed at our accredited New York plastic surgery facility; if it is easier for you, however, you can schedule your initial consultation and after care appointments at our Connecticut cosmetic surgery office. The procedure begins with the infusion of dilute solutions of local anesthetic. The New York plastic surgeon then makes incisions — a fraction of an inch — in each area to be treated. A cannula (a thin, hollow tube) is inserted and carefully guided through the areas of fat accumulation while a vacuum device actually suctions out the unwanted fat. Depending on how many areas are treated, the procedure can take between one and four hours.

After liposuction surgery, a snug-fitting, girdle-like garment is placed on the treated areas. This will help to reduce swelling and encourage a smoother contour.

You will be up and around one or two days after surgery, but strenuous activities should be limited for the first couple of weeks. For several days following the procedure, you may have some soreness, but this is very well controlled with the prescriptions provided.

As you recover, there may be some tingling, soreness, and tenderness in the treated areas, but this is temporary. Incision sites are barely noticeable and will soon seem to disappear. Your protective bandage may be removed after a few days; but often, to help your skin conform ideally, we will suggest that you wear your garment for several weeks.

Expect some swelling, which will subside within a month or two. Bruising usually resolves in ten to fourteen days.

Obese patients can realize substantial benefits from liposuction, but must be willing to accept either a conservative change, the possibility of more than one treatment session, or a greater chance of contour irregularities and less than ideal skin re-draping. For each patient, we will give our educated opinion on the expected outcome.

For patients in good shape, with isolated pockets of fat, this procedure can give them the figure they've always worked for.

The results can be dramatic.

  • Saddlebags disappear.
  • Legs and hips become thinner and shapelier.
  • Stomachs become flatter and firmer.
  • Double chins can be streamlined.

Remember, though, that liposuction is not a substitute for exercise or weight loss. The best candidates are at or near their ideal weight — but almost anyone can realize an improvement in their body image through this procedure.
