New York Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser ResurfacingSmoothing skin imperfections. Softening laugh lines and crow's feet. Diminishing wrinkles. Repairing sun-damaged skin. Reducing acne and traumatic scars. Removing unwanted pigmentation. All of these significant skin problems can benefit from the skilled application of the carbon-dioxide (C02) laser.

Recent advances in the field of medical laser technology allow us to perform many different and amazing types of procedures at our New York and Connecticut plastic surgery facilities.

Laser skin resurfacing, the most common laser procedure, can remove or reduce wrinkles and fine lines of the entire face, soften deep laugh and frown lines, repair sun-damaged skin, remove dark age spots, and improve scars.

Skin resurfacing diminishes the outward signs of aging and revitalizes the tone and condition of the skin. And laser resurfacing may be done in conjunction with facelift and eyelid surgery, as well as with many other facial and body cosmetic procedures.

There are many different types of medical and surgical lasers because each laser unit has a specific light wavelength, and therefore a specific target tissue.

As the surgeon guides the C02 laser, light pulses accurately and precisely vaporize damaged tissue, layer by layer, revealing the new skin underneath. The laser beam is absorbed by the water in the skin's cells causing them to dry. The dead cells are then wiped away from the treated area.

The laser's fine and specific control offers a safer and more predictable procedure than the older techniques of dermabrasion and deep chemical peeling. It is also a procedure with absolutely no bleeding.

Based on the areas treated, the procedure takes between thirty minutes to an hour and a half at either our New York or our Connecticut plastic surgery facilities. The areas that have been treated will appear red, irritated and somewhat moist for the first few days, but this is totally normal. We prescribe special medications to accelerate the resolution of the redness.

Most patients are able to return to work in seven to nine days with makeup. The post-treatment redness gradually fades over a matter of weeks, leaving the skin with a fresher, smoother, more polished and youthful appearance. After treatment, the routine use of sunscreen is recommended to protect your skin from damaging ultraviolet rays.

For patients with milder cases of the above skin conditions, there is now the lighter laser "feathertouch peel" that has a much more rapid recovery period.
